Recollections of the
Kimbolton Fayre Tea Tent

A Short History by Christine Rowland

The Tilbrook Amenities committee is hosting the annual Tea and Cake tent at the Kimbolton Fayre on Sunday 10th July – this is our biggest fund raising event in our calendar and the proceeds from the fund raiser go a long way in maintaining the village hall.  Below is a short recollection by Christine Rowland  of how the tea tent started.

"My husband was a founder member and Chairman of the Tilbrook Country Fayre which was created in the Shuttles Pub (subsequently Cathy Sapsed’s home) by a few villagers and firemen from Kimbolton.

It was going to be held on our playing field but grew much bigger than anticipated with the hunting, shooting and fishing theme.

One of the group was Roger Underhill (now deceased but lived at 1 Station Road) who was the Domestic Bursar at Kimbolton School. He managed to get the Castle management to let us us their grounds. It was a tremendous success and was still called Tilbrook Country Fayre until the Sporting Bears asked to take it over a few years ago.

We retained just the tea tent which has kept the Amenities Committee solvent ever since. We have only ever run out of cakes once, so villagers usually need to contribute several cakes/scones etc. - volunteers also used to make ham or cheese baps in the village hall the night before the event."
