Many congratulations to those elected and we look forward to offering them our support in future Parish matters.

HUNTINGDONSHIRE DISTRICT COUNCIL

Congratulations are also due to Jonathan Grey (Conservative) who was re-elected for our Kimbolton and Stoneley ward in the District elections with 884 votes (206 Votes Labour, 154 Votes Green).

However, Huntingdonshire District Council is now under ‘No Overall Control’ for the first time since its creation in 1973.  Between 1973 and 1976 the Authority was administered by a majority of Independent Councillors, which then changed to Conservative – until that 46-year stretch ended at this election.

The Council has 52 seats, and the new political makeup is as follows:

      Conservative  22

      Independent  15

      LibDem  10

      Labour  4

      Green  1

The Independents all joined an “HDC Independent Group” – although there are 4 distinct groups as they come from St. Neots, St. Ives, Huntingdon and Yaxley.

As you can see from the numbers above, no one political party can command a majority. The most important decision of the new Council was to elect a Leader – who then appoints their Cabinet. Following the election there were extensive talks amongst non-Conservatives to find an agreement as to how they could form an Alliance to run HDC.

The outcome was that Cllr Sarah Conboy (Godmanchester, LD) was elected Leader.  She appointed Cllr Tom Sanderson (The Stukeleys, Ind) as her Deputy.  She also appointed 7 other Councillors to her Cabinet – 3 Independents, 2 LibDem, 1 Labour, 1 Green.
